THE PROBLEM
A collapsing mountain system
Despite its ecological significance, the Rwenzori region is caught in a social and environmental systemic crisis:
-
Climate change
Melting glaciers and high-altitude moss fire caused by climate change have removed the mountain's natural water regulation.
-
Unsustainable practices
Rapid population growth and reliance on wood-fuel and slash-and-burn agriculture intensify the destruction cycle.
-
Catastrophic Consequences
The result is a cycle of recurrent flooding, landslides, infrastructure destruction, and agricultural losses that deepen local poverty and threaten the Rwenzori ecosystemic function.
